Skin lovin’ | The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane*

Anyone who loves skincare would have heard how Retinol does a ton of good for the skin. Well, it was about time I incorporated one into my skincare routine and Beautyfrenzyshop was kind enough to send me The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane. I once tried a Retin-A cream and guy is sitting somewhere in my closet because, of course, it broke me out. Anything that breaks me out is my enemy. Lol! So I tried this guy with fingers-crossed, hoping I love it.

According to Deciem, The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane is a water-free solution which contains 1% pure Retinol, an ingredient that can reduce the appearances of fine lines, of photo damage and of general skin ageing.

Ingredients

Squalane, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Retinol, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, BHT.

Let me go a bit into what Retinol and Squalane is and what they actually do for the skin.

Retinol is a Vitamin A derivative that reduces wrinkles, prevents fine lines, evens out discoloration, brightens skin tone, unclog pores and reduces acne.

Squalane is a non-irritating oil and natural moisturizer that occurs naturally in the body but is also derived from plants. Overtime, our skin produces less Squalane and so needs backup. Squalane is also known as an anti-bacterial that creates a barrier between the skin and the environment so your skin retains moisture longer. It softens and brightens, corrects uneven skin, scars and age spots.

So guys, you see we are in good hands!

My observation.

Let me start by saying this serum is AMAZING!

When I received it two weeks ago, I didn’t know what to expect. I opened it and I was slightly confused as to what it was as. It looked and smelt like an oil, but eventually I realize it’s a retinol serum. Lol! Anyway, it is a very light, pale yellow oil-like serum that glides smoothly over the skin. It comes in a 30ml bottle and the dropper makes it rather convenient to use. It has this medicine-like smell which isn’t awful, irritating or over-powering.

When it comes to moisturization, this serum does a good job! What really stood out for me was waking up with such supple, hydrated skin in the mornings. Another thing I noticed quite early was that it reduced inflammation on application and make my skin smoother. It also made my skin visibly brighter and more even. However, my skin experienced sensitivity when I started using it in combination with Mandelic Acid. Little did I know I wasn’t to combine 2 products with really active ingredients in them. So I stopped using them together and my skin is back to normal. Now, I use Mandelic Acid in the day and this serum at night.

Will I purchase when exhausted? Definitely!!! I believe every lady in their 20s and beyond should be using some form of retinol to slow down the aging process and this solution is a good one.

If you have really sensitive skin and you’re just starting out with Retinols / retinoids, The Ordinary has a range of other percentages that are less irritating to your skin. I advise you start with the Retinol 0.2% in squalane or Retinol 0.5% in squalane.

Suggested use: Use Retinol at night. If you have sensitive skin, DO NOT combine use with Acids as it will largely irritate your skin. Also, make sure to hydrate skin properly for your skin as this reduces the irritation and dryness accompanied with retinol / retinoid.

Hi Ifeoluwa, I wondered if you had noticed a change recently in the colour and smell of your Retinol 1% in Squalane from the Ordinary. I’ve been using it for three years and really love it but in my recent batch of three bottles the serum seems more yellow and the smell stronger. I have just sent an email to Deciem about this and hope to get a reply soon, but just wondering if you had noticed a change. It seems to do the same job as before but I am concerned that possibly I received a batch that had been stored too long and gone off, which is unusual for Deciem. I tried buying one from a supplier here in Ireland and it had the same slight colour and smell change. Possibly the formula has been tweaked. Just wondering if you have noticed any difference yourself. Thanks in advance. Sophie

I’ve just used the 0,2% for 1 week and man what a huge difference already! I thought I’d have to wait several skin cycles meaning 3-6 months which is normally the case with retinoids / retinol but my skintone is already 3x brighter and more even than before starting this! I can’t wait to see how it looks 1 month in, I will probably go to 0,5% then when I’m used to it. Atm 0,2% every night has been fine for me, not using any other actives atm, just tons of serums and oils and spf. Excited!
